My thoughts on i.ph (as part of the blogger program)

October 28, 2005

It’s amazing how DotPH was able to come up with this blogger program.
Instead of spending on expensive advertisements, they decided to give the
opportunity to its users. Genius! Who would better know about the great
service of DotPH than its users.

What one can put in advertisements is so limited; too much information may
make the ad too crowdy. The ads would simply not be able to contain all the
information. Through information dissemination to other blog users, people
become aware of DotPH’s wonderful service.

This is precisely what MCI and Sprint did that significantly affected the
market share of the leader in the industry. They simply informed the current
consumers of the good and cheaper service; and people switched. Why? Because
it is their friends who say the service is good. Given a choice, who you
believe, a saleslady or your friend?

It’s also good for the company, less cost for advertising the service.

Just like when you watch a really good movie. You would recommend it to your
friends. You know it’s good because you yourself watched it. The difference
is that the moviehouse did not pay you to do so. Here, it’s a bonus that
DotPH gives incentives to its users.

To me, there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you do not lie just to say
something nice. It’s not difficult at all really, because users are
satisfied with the service and cool features.

My thoughts on i.ph (as part of the blogger program)

After quite some time now, I’ve posted a new set of photographs. I went to
Bacolod. And my camera is fixed already! Perfect timing. I placed over 400
(resized) photographs in a cd and the next day, I went to Ateneo (I had
class at night) to upload them to my site. The computers were very picky,
actually, they were programmed to be. I mean in some computers, you cannot
view the CD drive. In others, the drive A is not connected. In many, no
pop-ups were allowed (for safety reasons of course). The site of DotPH’s
photo gallery was designed in such a way that if you add photos, there’s a
new window that will pop-up. Same thing if you edit the title, delete a
photo, and the like. I couldn’t right click and open in a new window because
the option was in a drop down box. This almost made me go nuts. I was so
excited and yet I cannot post my photographs?!

No way.

I went back to i.Gallery and there I saw an option to add photos. I knew
there’s probably a window that would pop-up but I took my chances. Hey, I
could right click the link and open it in a new window. I can actually add
photos in another way! That’s what’s so great about DotPH. I appreciate the
way it was designed. With the different computers set up differently, I
still get to have more than one option to go through the services. If the
settings of a computer is limited and if DotPH didn’t have more than one way
to, let’s say, add a photo, then the user wouldn’t be able to add that
photo. DotPH was able to design the site in such a way that it’s flexible to
different settings.

They are able to make things more convenient for their users.

For this, I am grateful.

While uploading, I was given two options to upload the photos. I tried the
first option. to drag the photo file to the box. I didn’t count how many
exactly but I can add more than ten photos per upload. The uploading was
fast, mind you. One problem though, there was no caption registered. Or
maybe I just didn’t see it.

So I decided to use the second option. This time, there is an option whether
to put the caption below the photo uploaded. This was more simple and easier
to use. And so I did. Using 10Mbps, uploading was fast. There was automatic
resizing of the photos using my specified file size. So I didn’t have to
resize everything all over and re-upload.

DotPH continues to make the service more user friendly each time.

My thought on i.ph (as part of the blogger program)

October 20, 2005

If you take a look at my sidebar, there are lots of buttons and links. One
of the most useful yet unexplored feature is the Chikka text.

Chikka text. It’s amazing how people who visit my site can send me a
message to my mobile phone anytime and from anyone. This is very convenient
for me since I am not always able to check messages felt on the tagboard.
Not everyone who leaves a message on the tagboard checks my site regularly.
So, if I replied to their message in the tagboard, they may not be able to
reply it. Chikka text has allowed me to respond to messages more easily and
communicate better with those who visit my site.

Not only Chikka, I can also be connected to Friendster, Yahoo Messenger,
AOL Messenger, MSN Messenger. Visitors can view my profiles from my site.
All you have to do is to click on the icons of these in the sidebar, and
you’ll be able to be connected to me thru these. I like the idea that
everything I have online is collaborated in one site that I can call mine.

My thoughts on i.ph (as part of the blogger program)

Over time, DotPH has come up with numerous features. Most of them, I like;
but some, I don’t.

The Calendar. I find it kinda odd to look at the calendar and see that the
week starts with a Monday. Hopefully, now I have the option to choose what
the calendar looks like or at least which days it would start with.

I didn’t see the purpose of the search engine in my site. Maybe it wasn’t
of much us because I was mostly posting photos and not text. But just
recently, I noticed it has an option to search the web, and they’re using
Google! :-D Just like Gmail’s search engine. Great idea!

It would be great if the tagboard required the one who’s about to write me
a message to leave his/her email at least, so that I would be able to
respond more personally.

I am not too sure how but there are ads posted in my photo gallery. I am
not really fonds of ads. Hopefully, there’s a way to remove them.

My Thoughts about DotPH (as part of the Blogger program)

October 14, 2005

I was going around the site’s settings. I came upon “site traffic.” Does
this mean that I would get to see the number of people visiting my site?
That’s really great! It has a summary of the number of people visiting the
site per hour or per day. Everything’s recorded. It gives me a feel of more
or less how many are visiting my site. When I see that the numbers are going
up, I feel good because I know more people are able to appreciate my photos.

Moreover, I really like the count in the number of clicks on the albums in
the gallery. This gives me an idea of how many visits them and which albums
are visited more. I love this feature because the more clicks there are to
my photos, the more valued they are for me. The date when the album was
created or the count reset is also useful because I am now able to compute
the average number of visits per day for this or so album.

Even per photo, viewers are able to comment on the individual photos.
Before, I had a hard time checking on the comments because I had to go to
each album to see if anyone placed one. But now, there is a space in the
sidebar that contains the links for the latest comments on my photos. This
has made the comment reading easier for me.

Why is this important to me? I am a photographer whose joy comes from
people’s appreciation of my works. The more the number of hits, the more
appreciated I feel, the more motivated I am to take more photos. Comments
imply that people care and they want you to improve. From the site traffic
to the count of hits per album to the comments, I am very happy about how
these contribute to my vision.

My Thought about DotPH (as part of the blogger program)

It was just recently that I’ve learned to use email to blog posting and I am
amazed. The first time I saw it, I didn’t give it much attention. I clicked
on it anyhow but I didn’t understand what it was for. Until I read a DotPH
user’s comments on email posting did I get curious again. I clicked on it
again and this time, I read the instructions carefully. I filled in the
necessary details. I tried it. And wow! How simple can it get!

I got even more curious. I tried attaching a photo to the email to see if I
can also do that from the email. Too bad…It got attached, but the actual
photo didn’t appear in the site. I would have to upload the photo first in
the gallery before the photo would appear. It would be very nice if there
were a way for me to automatically upload the photo even if it were attached
from the email. Let’s say, there would be a default folder that would
contain the photos uploaded from the email. It would be a great innovation
if DotPH were able to find a way to do that. Especially if I just took a
photo using my camera phone and I wish to post it right away, it would be
more convenient if there’s an option that would let me post a photo to the
blog even without going to my site.
p.s. I posted this entry using my email. :-)

My thoughts on i.PH (as part of the Blogger Program)

October 1, 2005

My focus is my photography. Naturally, I’d be posting photos. Before posting any photos, I had to upload my photos first. I thought it would take too much time to upload them. Surprisingly, it was quite fast, considering that I was just using a dial-up connection. There’s this setting in the gallery wherein I could set what the size limit per photo is. Another thing is the auto-resizing feature that they have—if I forget to resize the photo or didn’t notice the size of the photo, it automatically resizes the photo, making it more convenient for me (I don’t have to resize the photo and re-upload).

Since then, I would sleep late in the evening…or should I say early in the morning already. Uploading my photos was very addictive. I was enjoying the process. :-) I wanted to finish everything right away so I can tell my friends about the photos and let them comment on them.

At first, my photos were all scrambled. I had around 60 albums. Great thing was that DotPH had a feature that would let me put an album within another album. I was able to collect the related photos (for example, all kids’ albums) and put it in one big album. There was the same number of albums but at least, they are more organized. It’s easier to browse through them.

Another wonderful feature is the “Password Feature.” For some albums that I do not want everybody to see, I assigned a username and password. I would simply inform my friends about it and they could just login and type the username and password when they want to view these private albums.

There is also a count of the number of visits in an album. It’s an indicator of how many have visited my album. Mababaw as it may be, it makes me feel good, knowing that a lot of people are visiting my website. :-) This is another favorite feature of mine.

My thoughts on i.PH (as part of the Blogger Program)

One night, my friend asked me to join her at a party of her friend. I did. I met Emil; he was working for DotPH. My camera was with me and Emil saw some of the photos stored in my memory card. It was just the right time—DotPH was about to launch i.ph and they were looking for people to be featured. He offered me a chance to put my photos online with any name of my choice as a URL address. I was excited! It was one of my dreams to show my photos to the world. What better way than to put it in a website! And with a website of my choice!

Emil was kind enough to show me how the site works. I am not a computer expert; I have no idea how to make a website from scratch. I decided on a name. I told him. Then not long after, it was ready! He showed me the basics and it looked simple. I was afraid that if I went home and did it myself, I would forget how it worked. Good thing was that Emil assured me that if ever I had any questions or concerns or problems with the site, I could ask him any time. And surely, he responded to my concerns right away, no matter how little they may be.

Service is great! It’s amazing actually how DotPH has evolved, how their service has improved from almost a year ago. Now, I can login from my blog, I don’t need to go to i.ph anymore. The list of my albums can be seen in the sidebar. I know if there are any comments that were posted; I don’t need to go to each album to check for comments. From the many glitches in the website to almost perfect, with a bonus of more and new services that would make blogging more convenient and FUN for the users. It’s addictive I tell you. ;-)
